Oil painting of five digital stethoscope chestpieces in a row on a white background with a tinge of green

Hey guys,

Since my last newsletter I've started working as a GP. I'm currently doing 3 days as a regular locum in one practice, which so far has been pretty great (especially as the area and systems are very similar to that which I trained in over the last few years).

However I also picked up a regular salaried post for 1 day a week in a slightly different area using a different system, EMIS. That's going to be a steeper learning curve, especially because the systems can be quite complex when you first look at them. I like to know a bit about everything, particularly the tech I'm using to optimise my workflow and shave time off my consultation and admin processes.

It's been quite hectic and with the seasons changing; it's an odd feeling to leave the practice with an empty car park and a pitch-black night sky looming overhead.

Nonetheless, I’m picking back up with the content, hopefully I’ll be sharing more from within the surgery to give you a better idea of what my days look like (which I think visually is a nice change from before). I've got a video dropping soon about my first day as a qualified GP so check that out, which will be going out on YouTube.

Please also let me know what you want to see from me. Is it health tech, proactive health/longevity content, or just general GP updates?

Analogue and digital listening in one chestpiece, up to 35x amplification, noise cancellation and a live heart rate readout, paired with an app that flags structural murmurs. It’s something I’m keen to pick up once it reaches the UK. I’ve personally been searching for amplified alternatives to my littman for some time!

At 179.99 dollars, with a seven day battery, a display 46% larger than the previous tracker, proper GPS and automatic workout detection. The coaching layer sits behind Google Health Premium, which is increasingly becoming the standard for these launches. I’m still with my apple watch, what are you wearing?

The college's first annual State of General Practice report puts primary care's share of NHS spending at 8.3% in 2024/25, the lowest in a decade, and finds only around a third of GPs feel they have enough time to properly assess and treat their patients.

Over 1,800 respondents across 87 countries, and the more frequently people moved, the milder their symptoms. The clearest effect was on the psychological side, low mood and anxiety.

Mass General Brigham trained on over 40 million facial images to estimate biological age and survival from a single photograph.

Over 90% of devices used in Great Britain carry a CE mark (from EU), so this removes a looming extra approval route and the supply risk that came with it.

The former Olympic sprinter and DNAfit co-founder has raised 4.6 million pounds for a preventive health membership built on DNA, blood and gut testing, with a multiomic biological age measure and an AI health copilot planned next.

An AI conversational agent can draft care plans, with a state-licensed clinician required to sign off before anything happens. Early figures claim 23.5% more patient care time. Is this the future - I’ve personally been saying this for some time!

See you next week!

I'm No Longer a NHS Resident Doctor!

After thirteen years of training, the title on my badge finally changes.

Just 10mins per patient!?

Ten minutes to listen, examine, decide, safety net and document, and why that single number shapes almost everything about UK general practice.

Most Adults Read Fewer Than 5 Books a Year

That's 63% of us. Not because we don't want to read more, but because there isn't time.

Shortform gives you the key ideas from the books you keep meaning to get to: Atomic Habits, Thinking, Fast and Slow, How to Win Friends and Influence People, and thousands more. Each guide covers the core arguments, the context, and what to actually do with them, in a fraction of the time.

Five books a year is a slow way to learn. A hundred is possible.
