Hey guys, and welcome to the 3 people who have subscribed since the last newsletter!

Things are heating up in the wearable world. Oura is heading for IPO, Google is developing new ways to detect things like insulin resistance using existing biomarkers collected, and Huawei’s new watch can perform ambulatory blood pressure monitoring - I can barely keep up!

I’m starting a NHS vs Private series on my socials, exploring the private GP world and psychology behind why patients opt to go private instead of seeing their NHS GP. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Here are some links I thought you’d be interested in this week:

Users of Oura are suing Oura for reported inaccuracies in its sleep tracking, one of Oura’s biggest features. A spokesperson from Oura said they ‘stand behind their science’. Since then, Oura has filed for IPO.

Suna Health is pioneering acoustic digestive state tracking through a wearable patch that continuously monitors gastrointestinal activity using AI-powered acoustic sensing. Think whoop but for your digestion and nutrition. With 28,000+ people on the waiting list, you can reserve it now for a small discount, whilst it lasts!

An open call for innovations that improve productivity in cancer pathways or support earlier detection and diagnosis, funded up to £5 million. Useful if you, or anyone you know, is building in this space.

OpenAI has connected ChatGPT for Healthcare to Epic, letting authorised clinicians pull and question notes, test results and medications, plus a plugin covering nine public sources including PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov. The connection is read only, for now!

Now open to eligible users in the US, pulling sleep, activity, nutrition, mindfulness and vitals into one place and trying to explain how each one moves the others.

The third generation of Huawei's blood pressure watch, still using a genuine inflatable cuff in the strap rather than an optical estimate, now noticeably slimmer and with European Society of Hypertension intervals built into its 24 hour monitoring. UK price is £399.99 from 23 September.

The company has FDA filings in for detecting and mitigating obstructive sleep apnoea, and a trial testing whether the Pod can reposition patients well enough to be an alternative to CPAP. A big move if successful!

Structural changes visible on MRI appear at least seven years before amyloid plaques show up on PET. It is the earliest imaging signal found so far, and it raises a question about when we should say the disease actually starts.

See you next week!

Thoughts on AI Scribes in GP

My honest take on where AI scribes actually help in general practice.

Why aren't there more private GPs?

I ask why private general practice has stayed so small here compared with other specialties, and put the question to any GPs watching.

NHS vs Private Care

My thoughts on how NHS and private care really compare, and where the meaningful differences sit once you are through the door.

Medicine doesn't have to be our whole life

Medicine isn’t my entire life, and it doesn’t have to be yours, either. I shared a few things that I do outside of medicine.
