Hey guys,
I visited a Spire hospital as a patient for the first time this week (shoutout to my wife’s private healthcare benefits). I know a single person’s experience doesn’t begin to capture the breadth of feedback needed to compare private vs nhs care, but I’ll keep you guys informed of any reflections once I get my MRI done (IYKYK).
I’m probably in the Italian Dolomites right now (I’ve scheduled this newsletter a day in advance), my second time visiting (can you blame me?). It’s a much needed break from GP land and SocialPrescriber / Video content work, so I’m exchanging it for some hikes, sun and cool blue lakes.
Until then, here are some news I found interesting:
A new Stanford study points to a breakdown in communication between immune cells as a major driver of biological ageing. “Senescent neutrophils are killing our tissues,” Andreasson (author) said. “Clearance of these cells is essential for preventing chronic inflammation.” The article linked above (by Bruce Goldman) breaks down the study in lay terms and makes for an excellent read.
Samsung's Galaxy Ring can now flag sleep apnoea risk with FDA clearance behind it. It seems like big tech are chasing novel detections in a bid to differentiate themselves.
Google's new Health Guardian feature for Pixel Watch and Fitbit is built to detect physiological changes in the body that reflect insulin resistance, without measuring glucose or insulin. I’m incredibly skeptical of this one, and feel it opens doors for ‘indirect’ monitoring claims, and to what end!
See you next week!
